Richard Mendoza - The Driver: Richard Mendoza first raced in 1990, but was unable to raise the necessary finance to progress to a higher formula. However, something happened to him that made him determined to start motor racing again. In 1993 he was diagnosed with cancer and underwent four months of chemotherapy at The Royal London Hospital in London. This experience put his whole life into perspective and made him realise what was important in life, and what was not. Whilst recovering from his illness he promised himself that he would start racing again because that was what he had always wanted to do.
In 1995 he purchased a Formula Ford racing car and competed with some success in a handful of races, attracting sponsorship towards his racing costs from several companies who benefited from a great deal of publicity. For 1996, Richard contested the high profile 'B.R.S.C.C. Kent County Formula Ford 1600 Series', where he finished the championship in an excellent 3rd position in only his second full season of racing. In 1998 he moved up a formula and purchased one of the latest ZETEC engined Formula Ford racing cars.
During the summer of 1999, Richard won an incredible competition for the ride of a lifetime in the 'West McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 Grand Prix "2 seater" racing car' . Richard had finally fulfilled his 'Formula 1' ambition !
It was in January 2000 that Richard was shocked to be told that he had suffered a recurrence of his illness during a routine annual check up. This would require further major chemotherapy and treatment at St. Bartholomew's Hospital. Unfortunately, things did not go to plan, and during one of the chemotherapy sessions, Richard picked up a virus. With no "immune " system to defend himself, Richard had to undergo an emergency operation that left him in "Intensive Care" for five days, and unable to walk for two months. Through sheer determination and courage, he came through it. After eight months of continuous chemotherapy, treatment and surgery under the watchful eye of Professor Tim Oliver, Richard was finally given the all clear. This was the hardest and most important victory of his life, and made Richard more determined than ever to continue with his passion for racing cars.
2001: For the 2001 season Richard resumed his racing ambitions and joined the LINDFIELD RACING Team. He competed in the '2001 B.R.S.C.C. Kent County Formula Ford ZETEC Championship' with great success.
The motor racing also gives Richard an excellent opportunity to raise money for a very worthwhile cause in 'THE ORCHID CANCER APPEAL'. He has continued his 'POUNDS FOR POINTS' scheme which to date has raised over £ 10,000 for cancer charities. This separate scheme is explained in full within the proposal.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP RACES: In March 2001 Richard Mendoza resumed his motor racing campaign in the 'SWIFT' Formula Ford ZETEC racing car. People suggested that it might have been too soon after the treatment from the previous year. Doctors did not expect him to be able to drive a Road Car in 18 months, let alone race a Racing Car at 140 mph within 12 months !
The first race of the year was at Snetterton circuit in March. The plan was to drive the car and just finish the race. That in itself would have been a fantastic achievement. Richard qualified 4th on the Grid for the Race from 17 cars! In the Race he made a good start and moved up to 3rd place. He maintained the position, and was overjoyed to finish in 3rd and on the podium ! It was a week to the year since he had been in Intensive Care at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and a great result.
Since then Richard has achieved regular 3rd and 4th place finishes. He has been getting quicker and gaining more confidence in his 'SWIFT 1995 Formula Ford' car, which was one of the oldest cars in the ZETEC class.
2002: The plan is for Richard to contest and win the competitive and high profile '2002 B.R.S.C.C. Southern Formula Ford ZETEC Championship'. The championship consists of 14 races held between March and October at the race circuits of Brands Hatch near Dartford in Kent, Snetterton near Norwich in Norfolk, Donington Park near Derby, Castle Combe near Bristol and Lydden Hill near Dover in Kent. Brands Hatch is one of the most recognised motor racing venues in the world, and will be visited on five occasions during the season.
THE RACING CAR - MYGALE SJ2000 Formula Ford Zetec: In June 2001, Richard made a decision to replace the older 'SWIFT'. He acquired one the latest 2000 year 'Mygale SJ 2000' cars made by a company called 'MYGALE'. This racing car manufacturer won many championships in 2000, including the 'Formula Ford Zetec World Cup'. The difference in performance compared to the older car has been incredible, and Richard has already set much quicker lap times than before. It has been an investment that that will reap rewards, and hopefully race victories in 2002 !
THE RACING TEAM - Lindfield Racing Limited: The racing car is being run and maintained by a professional team called 'Lindfield Racing Limited' from an engineering workshop in Lindfield in West Sussex. Lindfield Racing is a LIMITED company, which enjoys a vast wealth of experience and success. Richard Mendoza intends to improve on his past results, and win races in 2002. This should be possible with a budget to support his efforts, and enable the car to be maintained to the highest possible standards.
2002 BUDGET - THE COST OF THE SEASON: Please do not be under the impression that motorsport sponsorship at this level is expensive. The new racing car has been financed and purchased, and all initial expenses have been covered. The supporting companies will only be contributing towards the actual running costs of the racing car during the season. The sponsorship will be raised with the support of four or five companies who will share the advertising space on the racing car together with all associated benefits. Sponsorship Packages for the racing car are available from just £ 1,500 for the entire 2002 season. This involvement would be tax deductible and could be offset against Corporation Tax as marketing and advertising expenses.
It is a very exciting opportunity that Richard Mendoza hopes will interest your company, and encourages you to become involved with Richard Mendoza Motorsport for the 2002 season.
Cancer is the scourge of the 20th century. In the U.K. one in three people are affected by cancer and one in four will die from the disease. Cancer is a concern close to the heart of every family in Britain today. Over the last twenty years the incidence of testicular cancer has doubled, and this trend is likely to continue.
As Richard Mendoza was recently treated for cancer by Professor Tim Oliver, he is taking the opportunity to use his motor racing activities to raise money for a very worthwhile cause in 'THE ORCHID CANCER APPEAL' charity.
'THE ORCHID CANCER APPEAL' was established with Professor Tim Oliver and a former cancer patient, Colin Osborne (Chairman) as Trustees, to fight the battle for men's cancers. Its four main objectives are:
· Increase public awareness, therefore leading to early diagnosis of testicular and
prostate cancer.
· Supporting the Anglian Trials Group Collaborative clinical and epidemiology studies.
· Funding laboratory research studies in biological and genetic therapy related to testis and prostate cancer.
· Supporting the development of pilot studies of chemotherapy and biological treatment for men's cancers in specialist centres aiming to translate the findings from laboratory research into the clinic.
'THE ORCHID CANCER APPEAL' target is to raise £ 10 million in the next ten years to fulfil its research proposals. Celebrity supporters include: Steve Davis MBE - World Snooker Champion (Patron), Michael Parkinson - TV Presenter (President), Pat Cash - Wimbledon Tennis Champion & Sir Geoff Hurst - Footballer (Vice Presidents).
Richard has put together a 'POUNDS FOR POINTS' scheme with the full support and approval of 'THE ORCHID CANCER APPEAL'. To date the scheme has raised over £ 10,000 for cancer charities, which has been used to buy vital equipment for the Medical Oncology Department at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London.
This scheme is totally separate to the "sponsorship of the racing car expenses", and the money raised from the 'POUNDS FOR POINTS' scheme does not contribute in any way to the motor racing budget.
The 2002 'POUNDS FOR POINTS' scheme works as follows: At the end of each race points are awarded to the drivers depending on their result i.e. 1st = 12 points, 2nd = 10 points, 3rd = 8 points, 4th = 7 points, 5th = 6 points down to 10th = 1 point. There are an additional 2 points for the driver who completes the fastest lap in the race. The driver at the end of the season with the most points wins the championship. Richard Mendoza is asking companies to pledge a pre-arranged amount of money for each point that he gets in the 'BRSCC Southern Formula Ford Zetec Series'. The more points he gains, the more money he will raise. At the end of the season once the Final Championships Points Table has been confirmed, the cheques will be collected from the supporting companies and made out directly to 'THE ORCHID CANCER APPEAL'. As in the past, Richard Mendoza will not get any commission or expenses from the scheme.
Points are awarded down to 10th place, and there will be approximately 20 cars entered in each race. Richard's objective is to achieve regular top three finishes at the start of the season, and several race victories before the end of the season. The best 12 race results from all of the 14 races will determine the final championship points and positions. Based on this, Richard realistically hopes to score approx. 80 points in the 'BRSCC Southern Formula Ford Zetec Series' in 2002.
The fund-raising scheme promises to generate a lot of continued exposure and interest in the media. It will also attract public attention and provide a tremendous amount of goodwill in the community, to the benefit of all of the companies associated with the racing car. Most importantly it will help 'THE ORCHID CANCER APPEAL' to continue their vital work. Can your company help 'THE ORCHID CANCER APPEAL' fight the battle for men ?
